Why I Dropped "When the Camellia Blooms"

I normally don't blog post when I drop a drama but I felt this one needed one since it's so critically acclaimed and won so many awards. I really liked the actress in "It's Okay, That's Love" but I just didn't really like her character in this drama.

So these are my thoughts through episode 9.

So here we go:

  • I was bored. I love slice of life dramas. Hospital Playlist. The Reply Series. Enjoyed them all but this one was almost excruciatingly slow. There's a lot of characters and it should not feel so monotonous but I don't feel much progress was made. Maybe 20 episodes was too long? Baseball star talking about divorce with his shallow wife over and over. Lawyer wife keeps putting up with deadbeat cheater husband. Dongbaek maybe wanting to date Yong Sik but mostly refusing him.

  • Needed more of the serial killer story. It was the only thing I was really interested in and they doled it out in so little pieces. When they focused on that- it was the punch I was looking for. Just not enough punch.

  • Hwang-Mi wasn't the person Dongbaek needed in her life. She was not a friend.

  • The women in the show were so mean to Dongbaek and not supportive.

  • Dongbaek herself was kinda a limp noodle for me.

  • Yong Sik's mom abandoning the friendship she had with Dongbaek because her son and Dongbaek liked each other? Sad she felt so much nothing for her child.

  • The baseball dad. I did feel bad for him for not knowing about his kid for years and trying to figure that out but he was just overbearing with it and the expectations that Dongbaek would just go back to him before he was even divorced was too much.

What I did like:

  • Yong Sik was cute. He fell hard and was devoted. A little over the top for me at times though. I just struggled to see what he saw in Dongbaek.

  • Pil-gu was cute and a good little actor.

The thought of watching 11 more hours of this show was unappealing to me. So I didn't. I did find out who was the killer. I had already figured out who the woman in the lake was. The killer wasn't too much of a surprise though for viewers the twist at the end probably would have been a surprise.

So in the end, it just wasn't the drama for me no matter how many awards it received.
