2020 as we all know has been a complete dumpster fire save a few good things for me. Asian dramas, finding new music through the dramas and the twitter buddies I've found. I've always been a music fan. It's shaped my entire life and it speaks to me more than most things in this world. Finding kdramas in December 2019 before the pandemic was providential and the music that I have gained from that was just the gravy. I've compiled a list of the five songs that I feel spoke to me the most and best represented the drama.
December 2019-November 2020
#5 "Fall in Love"
Young Jae and Choi Jung Yoon
This came from the drama "When My Love Blooms". I only made it about halfway through this drama but I love this song. It completely epitomizes the young love part of the story. Carefree and pure. It's just a catchy beat that puts a smile on my face.
#4 "Dazed"
Llwyd
"Forest" was the name is the drama this song came from. Forest was kinda a hot mess of a drama but the chemistry between the actors is what kept me around. I hear this song and instantly I am brought back into that feeling of excitement when you have a really chemistry filled couple on screen.
#3 "Here We Are"
Jooyoung
"Find Me in Your Memory" is a drama that took me by surprise. It was filled with tropes but I loved it. Moon Ga Young was effervescent and the chemistry she had with Kim Dong Wook was beautiful. I was an instant fan of hers after this drama. This song when I hear it makes me feel that love story all over again...every time. I would love another drama with these two.
#2 "Aloha"
Cho Jung Seok
I feel like I could have picked any song off the Hospital Playlist soundtrack and it would have found a place in this list. This sound just feels like HP to me. Hopeful and upbeat.
#1 "Late Regrets"
Ong Seong Wu
Maybe I'm suffering from a recency bias, but I can't get enough of this song. It's from the drama "More than Friends" and debuted in about the 10th episode. The main character realized too late that he was in love with his childhood friend and as he was sinking down into his sofa with all the regrets, this song began to play. Just the words, the tone and the fact that the actor is also singing this song, to me it's the song that fits any drama the absolute most this year and why it's number one on my list.
Soundtrack of the Year
"Hospital Playlist"
I threw a big hint earlier but it's no brainer for me. All the songs on this album bring me back to the wonder that was this drama. What was so special about so many of these songs is that it reminds me of the drama "band" singing it in the basement of the house or at karaoke. The recordings are mostly not the actors but it still doesn't diminish the memories. Some of the outstanding tracks include "Aloha", "In Front of a City Hall at the Subway Station" "The Wind is Blowing" "Oh What a Shiny Night" "I Knew Love" "Me to You, You to Me" and of course "Canon".
