"Oh My Venus" Review!

With all the action dramas premiering this month I wanted a sweet romcom to watch. I had planned to watch this one the last two weeks of February but I wound up watching it all in six days. It delivered on the sweet for sure. So Ji Sub just plays romantic hero so well. Shin Min Ah is a new find for me. She's got such an effortless way of acting that just draws you to her...and it's more than her killer dimples. She's just warm and real and if rumors are true she's in a drama with Kim Seon Ho this year that's just gonna be a chemistry factory!
Kim Yeong Ho has had a lot go on in his life but he's not a bitter person. He went out of improved himself and for the most part enjoys his life with his best buds, played by Henry Lau and Sung Hoon. He was intrigued with Joo Eun from day one and slowly fell for her. There was never any triangle not even with the ex boyfriend lurking. Yeong Ho never once wavered from her and that was very "beautiful and sexy".
Joo Eun was known for her beauty when she was younger. As time went on, she got busy and she gained weight as it often happens for us women. It didn't define her though. She never once was shown to us that she was hindered by her weight. Do I think she wanted to be thinner again? Yes but she still strived to be a good girlfriend and attorney. When Yeong Ho entered her life her initial thought was "I'm gonna get thin and sexy for revenge on my ex boyfriend" but that didn't stay her motivation. After discovering the medical issues she had the show and Joo Eun pivoted to getting her insides as pretty as her outsides. Yeong Ho loving her at all stages.
Where there times the show bugged me a bit at poking fun of her weight? Yes, not going to lie. I myself have struggled with weight and weight loss for the past 15 or so years. In 2016, I lost almost 80 pounds. Kept it off, had major surgery, gained 35 back and now I am struggling again to find the right balance and mindset to lose that weight. So at times, I can be hypersensitive about weight issues. The show mostly did a good job of not making fun of her heavier self but there were some barbs here and there that made me roll my eyes, but for the most part the message was clear "it's more important to be healthy inside".
I think this was one of Sung Hoon's better roles. He was more soft and vulnerable and I prefer that much more than his CEO chaebol roles. I would have liked more emphasis on the celebrity girl that fell for him. Henry Lau is just adorable. His English/Korean phrasing was funny and you just never knew what language was going to come out of his mouth.
I did not really enjoy the second couple. Su Jin and U Sik. The ex boyfriend and the ex friend. This was one area that I felt was too heavy handed with the I only lost weight for revenge on my ex friend. She just wasn't a likable character and the boyfriend cheated with her and that just makes me lose any interest really in either of them from the start.
I did the big eye roll when Yeong Ho didn't want to see Joo Eun after his accident and basically didn't have any contact with her for a year. Then one day he poofs shows back up and she's not even a little mad at him? Aw girl...he's healed...get a bit mad at him! The knitted scarf with the ring in the yarn ball was a big plus though!
Overall a delightful cast and plot with lots of cute scenes. Mostly positive vibes in terms of the weight loss angle. Probably will go down as one of my favorite romcom couples I've seen. Would have liked to have seen more character development in some of the secondary characters.
I give it an A-. Would have been an A but I just really didn't like the character of Su Jin.
